Hagia Sophia: Hagia Sophia, which was constructed in the age of byzantine emperor Justinian the 1st, between the years 532-537 as a church, and converted into a mosque in the ottomans period, cathedral in the world in respect to its dimensions and architecture, later with the light coming from its dome and the mosaics on its walls.
Yerebatan Cistern: It was constructed to be able to supply the water needs of the big palace, in the age of byzantine emperor Justinian the 1st, in ten year 542. The reason of the cistern being called as “Yerebatan Palace” among the people is the brilliance of the marble columns which are located in the cistern. Located in the Yerebatan Cistern, the head of medusa, which is one of the two masterpieces of the roman era, is being used as the support of two columns of the cistern. Many cultural activities are being held in this magnificent and mysterious place.
Topkapi Palace: Topkapı palace, which was constructed by Fatih Sultan Mehmet in the year 1472, was the headquarter of the state and the place of residence of the Ottoman Sultans for 380 years, until the construction of Dolmabahçe Palace. In 1924, it was converted into a museum by the orders of Atatürk and opened to the visits of the people. You have to join the queue at the door to see the magnificence of the palace and “Kaşıkçı Diamond “which receives the attention of the world.
Gülhane Park: You can meet with people from every part of Istanbul especially the tourists, in Gülhane Park which was named after the rose gardens of Topkapı Palace. No matter if you cannot have a picnic laying on the grass, you can watch Sarayburnu . Being used as zoo years ago, the place is just a park today.
Misir Çarşısı (Spice Bazaar): Mısır Çarşısı, which is one of the oldest bazaars of Istanbul, has been constructed in 1660 by the architect Kazim Aga. The bazaar in which plant roots, flower seeds , herbal medicine, dried nuts and fruits and charcuterie products, especially the spices are being sold, is closed only on on Sunday. Even the view of colourful spices and the smell hitting your nose immediately, are to enchant you.
Kapalıçarşı (Grand Bazaar): Kapalıçarsı, which was founded by the orders of Fatih Sultan Mehmet, was used to be called as Cevahir Covered Bazaar in the old times. Hundreds of shops are offering gold, leather, carpet, ornament and silver in Kapalıçarşi. It is not a center of attraction only for shopping, also with spaces inside.
Çiçek Pasajı (Flower Passage): The old name of the passage section was Hristaki passage and the old name of main building was Cite de Pera in the flower passage , which was constructed in 1876 in which the lower floors are the shops and the upper floors are luxury residences. Although the florist shops have occupied the shops of the passage in 1940, and the passage was used in this condition for a long time, the florist shops and residents have started to leave after the pubs were opened. The passage, which is still called as Flower Passage, is always one of the imposing and ornamented buildings of Beyoğlu.
Galata Tower: The tower, which was used by the Janissaries in the first period of Ottomans and converted into an observatory in the times of Selim the 2nd, was constructed in 1384. After having been damaged because of the fire in 1794, Galata Tower was re-constructed by Mahmut the 2nd, in 1832. The tower, which Hazerfen Ahmet Çelebi is said flied off here, is serving since the year 1967 for touristic purposes.
Hidiv Pavilion: It is the “art nouveau“ styled pavilion of Abbas Hilmi Pasha who was the “hidiv“ (means the governor) of Egypt in the beginning of the 19th century of Ottomans . The Tower of Hivdiv Pavilion has a wide and verdant garden, and a unique Bosphorus view, also one of the first elevators of Istanbul operated by vapour.
Pierre Loti: The historical Pierre Loti café which has been called with the name of French novelist Pierre Loti after being the frequenter of the café was being called Rabia woman café, in the old time. The hill, on which the cafe stands, is called as the Pierre Loti hill. In the café which you climb passing through the graveyard near Eyüp Sultan Mosque, it is delicious to have tea looking at the view.
Sepetçiler Pavilion: Sepetçiler Pavilion, which was started to be constructed in 1591, was finished in 1643. The pavilion, which was located where there ships belonging to Topkapı Palace was guarded by the gardeners and had been used to give sign to the navy. Here, Sultans had watched the navy set sail and return back. After renovating in 1990 and being used as international press center, the pavilion can be visited by tourists since the year 1998.
Dolmabahçe Palace: Dolmabahçe Palace, which was constructed by Abdülmecit the 1st, was opened with a ceremony the year 1856 after the Paris agreement. in the magnificent and ultra-ornamented palace, in which many different styles of architecture are used, in the section which is called as “the particular“, the fourth room facing the sea in which Atatürk has passed away is still preserved as it was before and can be visited as a museum.
Anatolian Fort: Anatolian Fort was constructed by Yıldırım Bayezid in the year 1395, for a preparation to the second Istanbul siege of ottomans. The fort, which was constructed on the narrowest point of Bosphorus, consists of inner and outer citadels and their walls. The surroundings of Anatolian Fort, which lost its military importance after the conquest of Istanbul, is today one of the specific residences of Istanbul. A road passes in the middle of the fort.
Rumeli Fort: It had been constructed by Fatih Sultan Mehmet across the Anatolian Fort, against the possible attacks from the north of Bosphorus. Being constructed in the form of “Muhammad“ in Arabic letters from distance, the fort is being used as a museum and open-air theatre. Rumeli Fort concerts are being held in the fort for years. There are cafes full of people having breakfast especially in summer and fish restaurants in its surroundings.
Sultanahmet Square: Sultanahmet Square, which was called as “horse square“ ,in the age of Ottomans, is one of the biggest square of Istanbul. Today, on the square which is one of the most important tourism centers of Istanbul, there is the German fountain, constructed as a remembrance for Kayser Wilhelm’ s visit. Do not forget to buy seeds to feed the pigeon while having a tour in the historical texture of the square.
Hagia Irene: Hagia Irene, which is the biggest byzantine church located in the outer courtyard of Topkapı Palace, is nowadays a museum serving to the istanbulites. Hagia Irene, which was constructed in the beginning of the fourth century, is the first place where the museums studies had begun in Turkey. It is going on hosting many art activities since the year 1973.
Galata Mevlevihane (Lodge used by meslevi dervishes): Galata Mevlevihane, which was called as Kulekapı Mevlevihane in the old time, was founded in the year 1491, after the conquest of Istanbul. After being used as a Divan literature museum, it was opened to public visits in the year 1975. “Sema“ shows are being held in the second and last Fridays of every month. Archeology Museum: Istanbul Archeology Museum, which is one of the biggest museums of the world, was founded by the artist Mr. Osman Hamdi at the end of 19th century and opened to service in 1891. Pieces from all of the civilizations located in the borders of Ottoman Empire are on display in the museum which is composed of four sections museum. All the pieces from all of the civilizations inside Ottomans Empire exhibited.
Yildiz Park: Yıldız park, which stands between Beşiktaş and Ortaköy, is one of the most romantic meeting places of Istanbul. Yıldız Park , which includes Malta and Çadir Mansions, appeals to all of the Istanbulites, not only the district residents. It is a very green park which the students running out of the school, old women knitting, the lovers holding hand for the first time spend time together.
Belgrad Forest: Belgrad Forest, which is left in the middle of the growing Istanbul, is one of the rare places where Istanbulites will be able to breathe and have a nice day with its huge trees in a wide area. Especially in spring, the Istanbulite nature lovers meet to take a walk and ride bicycle in the forest which gives chance to meet all of the colors in the nature.
Eyüp Sultan Mosque: The Eyüp Sultan Mosque residing on the Haliç coast in Eyüp, is not just an ordinary mosque. At the same time, it is holy place which many muslims visit regularly. Its tomb also has many visitors. There are countless muslims out of Istanbul coming to Eyüp Sultan which is one of the most important symbols of Istanbul.
Ortaköy Square: Ortaköy Square is a living and magical place with its cobblestone pavements, pier, cafe with backgammon voices, pigeons and mosque. Probably the ornament sellers, baked potato sellers would not be able to do business in Istanbul without Ortaköy. This square is one of the places which will always be a classic with its view and configuration.
Blue Mosque: This mosque, which architect Sedefkar Mehmet Aga, was made construct by Sultan Ahmed the 1st between the years 1609-1616, is one of the most important symbols of the city. Its surroundings become like a fairground in Ramadan. The magnificent courtyard of the mosque which is the center of interest of everyone is full of visitors. Many Istanbulites have a photograph with the fountain pool in front of the mosque.
